Guide: The adoption process

Two stage approval process

Introduction

There is a two stage approval process for prospective adopters. The aim of this process is to enable prospective adopters to learn about adoption within the first stage and then move through the approval process.

The whole approval process, from the point of formal application, should take no more than six months in total. With Stage 1 taking two months and Stage 2 taking four months. There is also a fast track process for some previous adopters and approved foster carers.

  1. If you haven’t already done so, please download and read our information pack. This guide is designed to give you information about adoption to help you think about whether adoption is right for you.
  2. Attend our information session– this is an informal opportunity to gather more information on adoption, meet other prospective adopters, hear from experienced adopters, and to have an initial discussion with adoption social workers. At the end of this meeting, you will be able to take away a Registration of Interest form, or we can email you one, if you prefer.
  3. Registration of Interest (ROI) form – once you have thought carefully about the information you have heard, and if you decide that you wish to proceed further. Submit your Registration of Interest Form (you will be given the details) and Devon Adoption will let you know within five working days whether we can accept the Registration of Interest from you. We select families based on the needs of the children waiting. If we cannot accept your Registration of Interest, we will give you the reasons why. If your Registration of Interest is accepted we can move you onto Stage 1 of the approval process.
